Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek Still In The Works
Paramount just announced that Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek movie is still a go. The next movie was supposed to be "Star Trek 4" directed by S.J. Clarkson with Tarantno's movie to follow that, but Clarkson's Trek movie has been "shelved" according to Paramount. Apparently that means Tarantino's movie has been moved up the list.
A lot of people including myself are a little scared of the idea Tarantino helming a movie of one of the most famous and beloved franchises in history, but a little more information has come out so, let's dive in!! Read on to see my five reasons why I think I'm ok with the idea of Tarantino doing a Star Trek movie..
The first big thing (and simplest) is to remember that Tarantino is still working on his current project with Leonardo DiCaprio and Bred Pitt "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" and will be tied up with that project for at least another year. Which means, anything can still happen.
Second, even though Quentin Tarantino is considered to be very unconventional in his directing style, he has said on many occasions that he very much loves Star Trek and would never do anything to disrespect it's history or fans as he's one of Star Trek's biggest fans himself.
Third, the actors of the reboot movies (which Tarantino's movie is rumored to be centered on.) Have all said they're really excited about the prospect of doing a movie with Tarantino and love the details that they've heard so far. Great you say, but what about Chris Pine as he recently walked away from the recently shelved "Star Trek 4" over a salary dispute?? Well, there hasn't been any official word on an agreement between him and Paramount yet,but it's my opinion that if Tarantino wants Chris Pine for a movie,he'll get him.
The fourth thing that makes me more open to the idea of a Star Trek film directed by Tarantino is what he's said he'd like to do for a story. There's nothing certain yet,but he's said that he always loved the classic Trek episodes "City on the edge of Forever" and The Next Generation's "Yesterdays Enterprise" and he would love to do a story along the lines of those famous Trek shows. He also said that he wants an an "R" rating...That'd be a first for a Star Trek movie, but he was quick to point out that it would be to show an accurate, realistic depiction of the dangers of humans living in outer space...Not for obscene language or sex scenes. That's an intriguing idea and something Star Trek has always softened in the past. If done right, it could definitely work.
And the fifth and final reason I think I'm ok with Quentin Tarantino doing the next Star Trek Movie is the mixed reactions of fans to the previous three movies. I personally loved the reboots. Especially "Beyond", but a lot of fans have had little interest in them and "Beyond" didn't do very good at the box office. To me,that means it's time to change direction and try something else. JJ Abrams (who still controls the movies) brought Star Trek back from the brink. He gave it the new life that the franchise needed to live long into the future. If it weren't for the reboots we wouldn't have Star Trek Discovery or any of the other new Star Trek TV shows that are now in development like the new Picard show, the new animated show or the new Section 31 shows that are in the works. He gave the franchise it's fresh start that it desperately needed..That being said, I think it's time to try something a little different and I think Quentin Tarantino will be the guy to do it. Like him or not, he's a great director with a lot of talent and he's said he wants to do a Star Trek movie for his last movie that he does before retiring.. Knowing that, I bet he'll knock it out of the park!!
